What Is the Ideal Mana Curve for Commander?

You can have the right number of lands, plenty of ramp, a healthy amount of card draw, and some excellent interaction, and still build a Commander deck that feels strangely slow.
Sometimes the problem is not what your cards do.
It is when you can actually cast them.
Commander makes it very easy to fall in love with expensive cards. Huge creatures, ridiculous enchantments, splashy sorceries and seven mana cards that practically announce, “If this resolves, something stupid is about to happen.”
That is part of the fun.
But if too much of your deck lives at the expensive end of the mana curve, you can spend the first few turns doing very little while everyone else develops their board.
A good mana curve is what turns a pile of powerful cards into a deck that can actually play Magic every turn.
What is a mana curve?
Your mana curve is the distribution of cards in your deck according to their mana value.
If your deck contains lots of cards that cost two and three mana, fewer cards at four and five, and only a handful at six or more, your curve will usually rise early and then gradually fall.
That is where the name comes from.
But the important part is not making a pretty graph.
Your mana curve tells you how likely you are to have useful things to do with the mana available to you throughout the game.
A deck with a good curve should usually be able to develop in the early turns, make meaningful plays in the middle of the game, and still have enough powerful cards to close out a multiplayer game.
What is the ideal mana curve for Commander?
For a typical Commander deck, most of your nonland cards should be concentrated around two, three and four mana, with the number of cards gradually decreasing as mana value increases.
A healthy general shape looks something like this:

This is not a deck building formula.
You should not start counting cards and panic because you have one more five drop than some theoretical perfect curve.
Commander decks are too different for that.
The important idea is the shape of the curve. You generally want plenty of useful plays in the early and middle turns, while becoming increasingly selective about cards as their mana cost rises.
The more expensive a card is, the more it should justify occupying that slot.
What should your average mana value be?
For many Commander decks, an average mana value somewhere around 2.5 to 3.5 is a reasonable place to be.
That range is deliberately broad.
A fast deck packed with cheap spells and efficient interaction might sit comfortably below 3.
A typical midrange Commander deck might land around 3.
A battlecruiser deck full of Dragons, Eldrazi or other expensive threats may naturally be considerably higher.
Average mana value is useful, but it can also be misleading.
Imagine two decks both showing an average mana value of 3.2.
One might have a smooth concentration of two, three and four mana spells.
The other might contain a strange mixture of one mana cards and enormous seven, eight and nine mana threats.
Same average.
Very different deck.
That is why you should look at the actual curve rather than treating average mana value as a score.
Why two and three mana cards matter so much
In a normal Commander game, your first few turns determine how smoothly the rest of your game develops.
Turn one is often relatively quiet.
Turn two is where many decks begin properly setting up.
Turn three is where you usually want your deck to feel like it is doing something.
This makes the two and three mana slots incredibly important.
They are where you often find your mana rocks, land ramp, cheap card advantage, utility creatures, setup pieces and efficient interaction.
Cards like Arcane Signet, Nature’s Lore, Farseek, Night’s Whisper and cheap removal spells are not exciting because they dominate the table by themselves.
They are exciting because they help your deck function.
A deck full of powerful four, five and six mana cards can look incredible during deck building and feel terrible when you draw an opening hand containing three lands and four cards you cannot cast yet.
Your early curve is what prevents that.
Your commander is part of your mana curve
This is one of the easiest things to overlook.
Your commander does not sit inside the 99, but it is one of the cards you are most likely to cast.
If your commander costs three mana, your deck already has a reliable turn three play available from the command zone.
If your commander costs six mana, the situation changes completely.
Now your deck needs to function for several turns before its central card even enters the battlefield.
That usually means you need stronger early development, more ramp, or both.
Commander tax matters too.
A four mana commander may effectively become a six mana spell later in the game. If your strategy depends heavily on repeatedly casting your commander, your mana requirements can become much more demanding than the printed mana value suggests.
Your commander should therefore be considered part of the curve even though most deck building tools display it separately.
Ramp changes your curve, but it does not excuse a bad one
Ramp lets you play more expensive cards.
It does not mean you can ignore your mana curve.
This distinction matters.
If your deck contains ten or twelve good ramp spells, you can usually afford more cards at five, six and seven mana than a deck with very little acceleration.
But your ramp also has to be cast.
A hand containing three lands, a six drop, two seven drops and a mana rock is technically capable of accelerating.
It is still not a particularly healthy hand.
Ramp works best when it helps you move through your curve faster, not when it is the only thing preventing your hand from becoming unplayable.
There is also a big difference between cheap and expensive ramp.
A two mana ramp spell helps you reach four mana on turn three.
A four mana ramp spell does not solve a deck that already struggles to make plays before turn four.
When evaluating your curve, pay attention not only to how much ramp you play, but also to where that ramp sits on the curve.
Not every expensive card is actually expensive
Mana value does not always tell the whole story.
Commander contains plenty of cards that technically have a high mana value but are rarely cast for their printed cost.
Cost reduction, alternative costs, delve, affinity, convoke and other mechanics can dramatically change how a card behaves in a real game.
A seven mana spell that routinely costs three is not putting the same pressure on your curve as a normal seven mana creature.
The same is true in the other direction.
An X spell may technically have a low mana value in your deck list while usually being cast for six or seven mana during a game.
This is why your mana curve should always be interpreted through actual gameplay.
The graph is useful.
What your deck really pays for its spells is more useful.
Cheap interaction helps your curve enormously
Interaction is another reason you want enough cards at the low end of the curve.
Suppose you have five mana available.
If your removal spell costs two, you can remove a threat and still spend three mana developing your own board.
If your removal spell costs four, most of your turn disappears.
This becomes even more important when you want to hold mana open.
Cheap removal, counterspells and protection allow you to interact without sacrificing your entire turn.
That is one of the reasons efficient interaction is so valuable in Commander. It is not only about answering threats.
It is also about using your mana efficiently while continuing to advance your own plan.
Your curve should match what your deck is trying to do
There is no universal Commander mana curve because Commander decks are not trying to play the same game.
Aggressive decks
Aggressive decks generally want a lower curve.
They need to establish pressure early and continue deploying threats without spending entire turns casting one card.
A deck trying to attack from turn three onward cannot afford to have half its hand sitting at five mana or more.
Midrange decks
Midrange Commander decks usually want a smooth curve with a strong concentration around two to four mana.
They need early development, strong middle game plays and enough expensive threats or engines to take over later.
This is where the classic downward Commander curve works particularly well.
Control decks
Control decks can sometimes support a slightly higher curve, but they also need a significant amount of cheap interaction.
Being a control deck does not mean doing nothing for five turns and then casting something enormous.
You need to survive long enough for your expensive cards to matter.
That usually means cheap removal, counters, card selection and instant speed plays.
Spellslinger decks
Spellslinger decks often have very low curves.
Casting several spells in the same turn is usually more important than casting one individually powerful spell.
A three mana spell can actually be expensive when your deck wants to cast four spells in one turn.
Battlecruiser and big mana decks
This is where a higher curve makes sense.
Dragons, Eldrazi, sea monsters and other big mana strategies are supposed to play expensive cards.
Trying to force them into the same curve as a low to the ground spellslinger deck would defeat the point.
But even these decks need infrastructure.
The higher your curve becomes, the more important ramp, land drops and early setup become.
If your deck wants to cast eight mana creatures, it needs a convincing answer to the question:
What am I doing before I reach eight mana?
Check the mana curve in your actual deck
MTG Master evaluates your mana curve alongside lands, ramp, commander cost, card draw, interaction, and overall strategy.
The five mana test
Once a card costs five or more mana, I start asking harder questions.
Does this immediately affect the game?
Does it generate significant value?
Does it threaten to win?
Does it dramatically advance my strategy?
Would I be happy drawing this when I am behind?
Expensive cards need to earn their place because there are only so many of them you can comfortably play.
This is especially important at six, seven and eight mana.
Commander is full of amazing expensive cards.
That does not mean your deck needs all of them.
When cutting cards from a deck, I often start at the top of the curve.
It is surprisingly common to find three expensive cards doing roughly the same job.
Keep the best one.
Your opening hands will thank you.
Do not confuse mana value with power
One of the most common deck building traps is assuming that expensive cards are your powerful cards.
They are not necessarily.
A two mana engine that generates value for six turns may contribute far more to winning the game than a seven mana creature.
A one mana protection spell can save the card that actually wins you the game.
A cheap tutor, removal spell or combo piece can have an enormous impact despite barely costing any mana.
Good Commander decks are not powerful because they contain expensive cards.
They are powerful because they spend mana efficiently while advancing a coherent plan.
Signs that your mana curve is too high
You do not need advanced statistics to notice a bad curve.
Your games will tell you.
Your curve may be too high if you regularly:
- Keep hands with several cards you cannot cast
- Spend turns two and three doing almost nothing
- Need to draw ramp for your hand to function
- Have multiple five, six and seven mana cards stuck in hand
- Struggle to cast more than one meaningful spell per turn
- Fall far behind after one expensive spell gets countered or removed
- Feel like you always have powerful cards but never enough mana
That last one is particularly revealing.
If your deck constantly has “amazing cards” in hand that you cannot cast, the problem may not be mana screw.
The deck might simply be too expensive.
Signs that your mana curve might be too low
Lower is not automatically better either.
If almost everything in your deck costs one or two mana, you need a reason for that.
Fast combo and highly synergistic decks absolutely can operate this way.
But a casual or midrange deck with an extremely low curve can run into a different problem: individual cards may not have enough impact for a long multiplayer game.
Your curve might be too low if you regularly empty your hand without establishing enough pressure, topdeck cards that feel insignificant in the late game, or generate lots of activity without actually moving toward winning.
This is where card draw, engines, mana sinks and scalable effects become important.
A low curve is strongest when the deck can convert its mana efficiency into something meaningful.
Mana sinks make your curve better
One concern with lowering your curve is what happens when you have ten mana and most of your cards cost two or three.
The answer is not necessarily adding more seven mana cards.
Mana sinks solve this problem beautifully.
Activated abilities, X spells, repeatable engines, kicker effects and commanders that can consume additional mana allow you to play efficient cards early without wasting your resources later.
This gives your deck flexibility.
You can function on three lands without becoming irrelevant when you have ten.
That is often better than filling your deck with expensive cards just because you are worried about the late game.
How many expensive cards should you play?
There is no fixed number, but this is one area where restraint usually improves a deck.
For a typical Commander deck, cards costing six or more mana should generally be a relatively small part of the nonland package.
Every one of those cards should have a reason to be there.
Big mana strategies can obviously play more.
A deck built around cheating creatures into play can also ignore normal assumptions. Reanimator decks, for example, may actively want enormous creatures because they have no intention of paying their printed mana costs.
Context always wins.
The question is not:
“How many seven drops am I allowed to play?”
The better question is:
“How often does my deck actually want to draw a seven drop?”
If the answer is “not until much later,” you probably do not need six of them.
Mana curve and opening hands
Your curve has a direct impact on how often you can keep your opening seven.
Consider a hand with three lands.
If the other four cards cost two, three, three and four mana, you probably have a game.
If they cost four, five, six and seven, you are suddenly relying heavily on your next few draws.
Both hands contain the same number of lands.
The difference is the curve.
This is why mana curve, land count and ramp should never be evaluated completely independently.
They work together.
A lower curve can often function with slightly fewer lands.
A higher curve usually needs more reliable land drops and stronger acceleration.
A deck that wants to cast its six mana commander consistently has different requirements from one whose commander costs two.
Use goldfishing to test your curve
One of the best ways to evaluate a mana curve is also one of the simplest.
Draw opening hands and play several turns by yourself.
Do not worry about opponents.
Just see what your deck naturally does.
Ask yourself:
What am I usually doing on turn two?
What am I doing on turn three?
Can I use most of my mana?
When can I realistically cast my commander?
How many cards are stuck in my hand?
If my ramp gets removed, does the deck still function?
Can I cast two useful spells in the same turn once I reach the middle game?
Do this repeatedly, not once.
One opening hand proves almost nothing.
Ten, twenty or thirty simulated hands start revealing patterns.
If you repeatedly find yourself staring at expensive cards while passing with unused turns, your curve is telling you something.
A practical way to improve your mana curve
When I want to fix a Commander deck’s curve, I do not start by obsessing over the average mana value.
I sort the deck by mana value and look at the shape.
First, I check the expensive end.
How many cards cost five or more?
How many cost six or more?
Do several of them perform similar roles?
Could one expensive effect be replaced by a cheaper version?
Then I look at turns two and three.
Do I have enough ramp, setup, card advantage and interaction to consistently participate in the game?
Finally, I look at how those pieces connect.
If I cast ramp on turn two, what does that unlock on turn three?
If I do not draw ramp, can the deck still make useful plays?
If my commander costs four, can I reasonably cast it while still developing the rest of my strategy?
That tells you much more than chasing a specific average mana value.
So, what is the ideal Commander mana curve?
For most Commander decks, the ideal curve is weighted toward two, three and four mana, then gradually becomes thinner as cards get more expensive.
You want enough cheap cards to develop early.
Enough middle cost cards to execute your strategy.
And enough expensive cards to give the deck real finishing power without constantly clogging your hand.
Your exact curve depends on your commander, archetype, ramp package, land count and power level.
A Dragon deck should not look like a spellslinger deck.
A reanimator deck should not look like a Voltron deck.
A fast combo deck definitely should not look like battlecruiser Commander.
The goal is not to build the lowest curve possible.
It is to build a curve that lets your deck use its mana effectively from the opening turns to the end of the game.
Because the best card in your deck does not do much when it has been sitting in your hand since turn one waiting for land number seven.
